Problems Associated with Concrete Leveling Sidewalks

Right from the very first time, the use of mudjacking concrete sidewalks gained global acceptance and recognition; there have been some forms of challenges which has raised questions in the minds of people.

Although mudjacking concrete sidewalks is the least expensive procedure of concrete replacement, concrete leveling and the use of polyurethane foam, it is also associated with some forms of demerits, after all, there is always a downside associated with going with the cheapest solution.

Although the process of mudjacking concrete sidewalks has been around for over 60 years now, we shall take a look at the most common problem associated with the procedure. These problems include but are not limited to;

  • Problems relating to the Size of Holes:

For mudjacking to be as effective as possible, it requires 1.5-2 inch diameter holes to be drilled into the surface of the concrete. The total number and frequency of the drilled holes are determined by the condition of the existing concrete and the experience level of the crew carrying out the mudjacking.

Drilling the wrong size of the holes in your concrete can lead to disfiguring of your concrete slabs. In most of the cases, these holes may stick out like a sore thumb after the whole process. If the holes are placed too frequently on the concrete slab, they can cause the concrete sidewalk to crack as well as resulting in the concrete needing to be replaced anyway. This is more or less like creating more problems for the property owners.

  • Problems relating to the Weight of Mudjacking Material

The cement slurry utilized in the mudjacking procedure is usually made up of topsoil or sand mix which is combined with a little Portland cement as a binder. These materials on their own are heavy and can weigh as much as 100lbs per cubic foot.

Most often than not, the reason why the sidewalks settle is because of a poorly compacted or prepped soil under the subgrade or concrete slab. A heavy mudjacking material can be disastrous since it adds more weight to the poorly prepped weight of the mudjacking material thus causing more problems to the already damaged slab.

  • Problems relating to Longevity of Mudjacking Material

As stated early, the mudjacking material comprises of only a small percentage of Portland cement with the bulk of the mixture coming from topsoil or sand mix. This is the major reason why mudjacking is so inexpensive since topsoil is cheaper than polyurethane foams.

Although they serve as the best option when a budget is concerned, it is a well-documented fact that topsoil is susceptible to deterioration by oversaturation of the area and/running water. Water can cause a breakdown of the slurry material thus leading to more problems in the concrete filling.
